Two steps to take before shopping for furniture at deceased estate clearance sales

Deceased estate clearance sales are great places to find high-quality antique furniture pieces. If you're planning to shop for furniture at some of the estate clearance sales in your local area, here are two things you should do before you begin.

Find out how much it costs in your area to have furniture refinished

Before you go explore any of the estate clearance sales that are currently taking place, you should contact local businesses in the area that offer furniture refinishing services and find out how much it costs to have them refinish antique furniture. The reason for this is that the furniture items that are typically included in a deceased estate clearance sale are ones that were in the deceased person's home for decades and were used regularly throughout this period. As such, whilst there's a good chance you'll come across some beautiful and heavily discounted older pieces of furniture at one of these sales, these pieces may require some TLC before you can start using them.

If you find out much it costs to have, for example, an antique chest of drawers refinished, before going to one of these sales, and you come across a chest of drawers that you love but which requires restoration, you'll know the total cost of buying it (including the fee that would come with refinishing it) and will be better able to stick to your shopping budget.

Ensure that you're ready to take any furniture you find back home with you

Unlike furniture stores that sell new or secondhand pieces, those who host deceased estate clearance sales don't always offer a delivery service for the larger items they are selling. Before you start going to any of these sales, you should ensure that you make arrangements so that you're ready to take any furniture pieces you love back home with you, immediately after coming across them. You might, for example, want to borrow your relative's larger vehicle for the day when you go to a few of these sales so that you have enough space to fit one or two pieces of furniture into it.

This is important, as the most special antique furniture pieces sold at these estate clearance sales are often rare or true one-of-a-kind items, that are usually snapped up rapidly by those who find them. As such, if you find, for example, a gorgeous antique chair at one of these sales, and you leave it behind with the intention of coming back for it after you've found a big enough vehicle to put it in, there's a chance that someone else will buy it whilst you're making these plans.
